The Iranian government has been cracking down on Internet freedoms within the country. The country allegedly has plans to move towards a national Internet system able to filter content along the lines of what China does with the Internet for its citizens. Iran has now instituted a new regulation which prevents banks, insurance firms, and telecommunications companies from dealing with customers who send e-mails from foreign e-mail addresses. In effect, Iran is banning correspondence with customers on services such as Gmail, Hotmail, or any other US based e-mail services. The Ministry of Telecommunications has ordered that only e-mail addresses belonging to Iran can be used. All e-mail addresses used within the country have to end with iran.ir, post.ir, and chmail.ir for consumers. Governmental organizations can only use addresses ending in .ir or gov.ir. Universities must now use addresses ending in .ir or ac.ir. The Iranian government says this move is to protect confidential information. The statement seems to point a finger at foreign email services as possible security breaches. The move would also allow for easier monitoring of e-mails sent by people within Iran. Can you spell “Oppression”?

Net neutrality might be a bit of a touchy subject in the United States, but progress is being made in Europe. The Netherlands has become the first country to enact net neutrality laws, preventing Internet Service Providers (ISP) from blocking or slowing down different types of internet traffic. It also stops ISPs from charging extra to access specific websites or services. The legislation was first put forward in June 2011, but just passed into law on Tuesday.

There are some exceptions to the law: ISPs can manage traffic if the network is congested, but otherwise providers are expected to treat all traffic as equal. The Netherlands joins Chile as the second country in the world that has firm net neutrality laws, while other countries are still debating the topic. The FCC does have net neutrality rules in place, but they’re limited in scope. ISPs can’t charge for additional access to competitors services, but they’re not restricted from offering faster access to specific services.

Sorry, porn sites. The malware content is usually not intentional on the website owner’s behalf, but is instead hosted on sites which have been compromised and infected. Symantec’s report, now in its 17th volume, says religious websites have 115 threats on average, mostly in the vein of fake antivirus software. Pornographic websites, in comparison, have less than a quarter of that number, averaging about 25 threats per website. However, there are a lot more porn websites on the great WWW than there are religious websites.

It turns out that Russia and the Scandinavian countries are the top-heavy winners, with a “greater than D cup” average size. American women were well represented with an average cup size of D. With a daily circulation of almost 3 million, Bild is Germany’s most popular newspaper, and it’s perhaps not too hard to understand why. Heck… I want a subscription!

Earlier this year, there were huge online and real-world protests in the US and abroad against the planned Stop Online Piracy Act (SOPA) and the Protect IP Act (PIPA). Many people, including tech companies such as Microsoft, said the two bills in the US Congress were huge online privacy threats, claiming the wording of the bills would allow the US Government to shut down any website, for little to no reason. After the protests caused many in Congress to change their stance on SOPA and PIPA, both bills were tabled indefinitely. This week, another bill, the The Cyber Intelligence Sharing and Protection Act, or CISPA, is scheduled to come up for a vote in the US House of Representatives. CISPA is supposed to fight cyber terrorism by allowing businesses to share any kind of cyber threat they may have heard about with other business as well as the US Government. The key difference between CISPA and the defunct SOPA/PIPA bills is CISPA has support from a number of tech companies, including Microsoft, Intel, Facebook and others.

Even with tech industry support, other advocacy groups don’t care for CISPA. The Electronic Frontier Foundation’s Activism Director Rainey Reitman stated last week: “CISPA would allow ISPs, social networking sites, and anyone else handling Internet communications to monitor users and pass information to the government without any judicial oversight. The language of this bill is dangerously vague, so that personal online activity –- from the mundane to the intimate -– could be implicated.” So far, no one is calling for thousands of web sites to go dark this week to protest CISPA as they did with SOPA and PIPA. However the Technology page of Reddit is currently full of CISPA-based news links, showing there are a growing number of protests against the bill.
